The problem of discovery and why D2C is crucial
Marketplaces have a problem of discoverability. This is especially true with Amazon. Too many sellers, too many products, too much of algorithms, too much optimization done on search keywords and sponsored listings.
This is what I did on Amazon "louis philippe shirts for men". You have no chance of getting to the brand you want even after searching for the brand.
There could be many reasons why this is happening.
From a customer's view it's just poor experience.
From a brand's perspective, this seems unfair as this search keyword and traffic should be directed to the brands products and not the competitors.
This problem of discovery is among the main reasons a brand should have a good D2C channel.
